Prof. Ralph Hertwig

Director of the Center for Adaptive Rationality, Max Planck Institute for Human Development

Talk Title:  Boost — empowering behavior change to address global challenges  

Biography: Ralph Hertwig is a cognitive psychologist and behavioral decision scientist. He is the Director of the Center for Adaptive Rationality at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. His research explores models of bounded rationality—such as simple heuristics—along with learning and decision-making from experience, the measurement of risk preferences, and strategies to promote better choices by strengthening people’s cognitive and motivational competences in both online and offline environments.

As a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering, and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, Ralph has contributed to independent scientific advice on a range of societal challenges, including obesity, the COVID-19 pandemic, social media and youth well-being, and democracy and technology.

Prof. Paul Taylor

Professor of Psychology, Lancaster University

Talk Title:  The future of behavioural research and policy

Biography: Paul Taylor is the UK Government's Chief Scientific Adviser for policing and chair of the Government's Social and Behavioural Science for Emergencies. As CSA, Paul ensures policing and wider government uses the very best science, technology, analysis and research to inform its practice and policies. Prior to becoming CSA, Paul founded the Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats (CREST), which brings together over 140 researchers from 35 universities and SMEs to deliver research that informs policy and practice in security and policing.
